My academic research emphasizes major depressions, bipolar disorders, Treatment Resistant Depression (TRD), stress-neuroendocrine mechanisms, and biomarkers including pharmacogenomics, metabolomics, and artificial intelligence to aid precision treatments. I focus on research translation, implementation, and dissemination to develop personalized, precision treatments. I am the author/co-author of more than 300 peer-reviewed publications, with more than 400 invited presentations, and more than three decades of research funding support. I have supervised 14 NIH “K” and Veterans Administration Career Development awardees, have received multiple awards from academic societie, led the University of Michigan’s Clinical Studies Unit for Affective Disorders, and then served 22 years as Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at Michigan; President of the Society of Biological Psychiatry, the Psychiatric Research Society; President of the Board of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention; Co-Editor of the Journal of Psychiatric Research for seven years; and inaugural Chair of the Faculty Group Practice in the University of Michigan Health System. In 2001, I founded the University of Michigan Comprehensive Depression Center, the inaugural Center of Excellence, which has more than 300 members from 33 different university departments, and led the successful naming gifts for the Rachel Upjohn Building in 2006 and the Eisenberg Family Depression Center in 2021. In 2008, as Founding Chair, I established the National Network of Depression Centers (NNDC), patterned after the nation’s Cancer Center Network; the NNDC is now a network of 26 of the nation’s leading academic medical centers.
